History of Crystal Middle School

According to the local historical society and Tim Farmer, history teacher and member of this society, Barton Store was the first building used for education in Suisun around 1869. Curry Grammar School was later built and dedicated to G.W. Crystal. Both of these early schools are reported to have been located at the current Crystal site. The Crystal building was expanded and the first local high school occupied a part of the building. However, due to funding problems the high school was closed. A new high school was built on the Crystal site in 1893. It was used until Armijo (which was located in the building that now houses the Fairfield courthouse) was built in 1915.

Crystal has since changed to house various grade levels. Most recently it became a middle school in 1991, under the leadership of Miss Lois Campbell (now Mrs. Lois Saunderman), Principal, and Lou Encalada, Assistant Principal.

Crystal's namesake was Mr. George W. Crystal, who was born in 1846 and lived in the Vacaville area for 21 years. During this time he was in the merchandising business, and also manager of a Vacaville bank. His son later went on to become a financial secretary in the United States Senate.

The staff and students are proud to have Mr. Dave Marshall, Principal, and Mrs. Stacy Burke, Assistant Principal, as our current leaders. Under their leadership and with the passage of a school bond in March of 2002, Crystal will be moving to a new site within three to five years. The new site will be where the current Crescent School is located.

For 20 years, Dave Marshall was a physical education teacher, baseball coach and athletic director at Armijo High School. Marshall left his position as assistant principal at Rodriguez High School to take the job at Crystal Middle. This is his second stint at Crystal, as he worked at the school before it moved to its current location at 400 Whispering Bay Lane as the Assistant Principal.

Dave Marshal has some goals in mind for Crystal Middle and those objectives will only be achieved through collaborative work and support. He is described as a “compassionate man who works for the needs of students and parents. He takes the time to listen. He's never in a rush to get things over. Every person's need is the most important thing in that moment.”

He attributes his passion for education to teachers and students. “Students' enthusiasm, their glow, their reactions to success, their outlooks on life…just the beauty in a young person growing up is why I like being around students.”
